Of course you're a romantic! That's why you're going down on a knee to propose to your girlfriend/ boyfriend. You already have the ring. You're on vacation. Now comes a few really important questions you'll need to consider in the planning stage: where will you propose to make it monumentally special? How are you going to announce it back home?
Well, you're here so you've kind of got the second question in the bag. When you go down on your knee to propose, you'll have me, an experienced photographer who specializes in engagement and proposal photography and I'll create for you a stunning photo gallery for you to share with your friends and family.
Having a surprise proposal photoshoot is immeasurably special. When you look back years later, no doubt you'll say, "I'd love to go back to that sushi bar by the beach the day I proposed to you." Well, having timeless photographs in your album will make it that much more special. There are two different options to photograph a surprise proposal.
Option A: To propose during a planned photoshoot. This does not hinder the surprise proposal, and it has photographic and cost benefit. Your Kauai engagement photographer will have far more control with lighting and your placement. The photoshoot would begin like a regular couples' session with a meet and greet, then into the session. Then you'd get a nod or wink from the photographer when lighting and placement conditions are aligned. Go time!
Option B: A stakeout/paparazzi-style photoshoot where your photographer will appear paparazzi style in the predetermined spot/time. With the stakeout, you might think it's a better surprise. Only statistics say otherwise. A decent percentage of partners are suspicious both ways; those that don't suspect don't suddenly get suspicious because you're having a photoshoot. A downside of the stakeout is your partner doesn't know you have a time-specific photographer appointment, so if your partner decides to stop at a store or to deviate from your day's itinerary, or just go slow, you'll no doubt feel the need to call the photographer and that adds stress. Your partner might ask, "Who were you talking to?" If you're running very late, your stress level might find itself off the hook. While the stakeout can go off without a hitch on time, as planned, there's no guarantee, which is why there's a big cost difference with the two options.
The choice is entirely yours. Most of my clients choose the couples photoshoot. The fee for the stakeout is roughly double.
'nuff said,
--David, your Kauai surprise proposal photographer
