If you've got more than 20 guests coming, I'd say you're having a DESTINATION WEDDING
A destination wedding photographer is a photographer who travels to different destinations across the world to photograph his/her client’s wedding. Destination wedding photographers are often hired to fly to Kauai. Of course using a destination wedding photographer goes against the grain of “buy local / use local” that’s especially meaningful in Hawaii.
Local photographers
For small weddings and elopements most couples don’t think twice about hiring local talent. Small weddings in Kauai usually take place on the beach, have authentic yet snappy ceremonies, and then your Kauai wedding photographer whisks you away to a private photo session. She/he might take you along a dreamy shoreline with misty mountains behind you, or lead you to a lush beach trail, where hanging palms and ironwood trees sigh in the breeze. Kauai photographers know the best spots and your photos will be an absolute merger of you and Kauai. I’d be thrilled to discuss your elopement wedding with you and see if I can get you into my calendar.
A larger wedding... for photography the merger of you and Kauai is but an aspect that's needed for your wedding. The magic of light and shadow should play an instrumental role in the story-telling of your special day. Destination wedding couples deserve high-rent wedding photos that are not just captured on the fly but crafted as timeless visual capsules that collectively tell a unique story: “The Day you got Married.” This kind of top-notch wedding photography is unlikely to be achieved by a part-time, inexperienced photographer.
Tying the knot in Kauai....guests are coming, some might live here in Kauai, others are flying in. It's going to be a big day for all. It’s not surprising that many couples believe destination photographers are the only way to go. But it's a fallacy to believe that there are no photographers in Kauai skillful enough to produce stunning wedding photos, even worthy of publication. It’s also a fallacy to believe that all destination photographers will produce an awe-inducing collection of wedding day photographs for you.
BOOK A LOCAL PHOTOGRAPHER
Take me. For 20 years I was a cinematographer that fashioned light and shadow and weaved the triangulation of stories into cohesive movies, before switching to still form photography - for a quieter life in Kauai. It’s now hardly quieter! I reckon I’m one of the busiest photographers on the island. Story-telling continues to run through my veins. So you might think that wedding photography rather than portraiture should be the introductory line on this website. But it's not for a few reasons.
When I take on big wedding photography that requires multiple hours, with a flow of guests, with a schedule for bride time sequences of photos, and likewise for the groom, with journalistic coverage of the event in conjunction with tailored portraiture, I do so because I know I can deliver the edited photos in under 2 weeks. Usually I do so in under one week! So time speaks. But the most important reason for me is the client.
Years ago, I was photographing a wedding with 300 guests. During the reception, the bride’s mother, who was seated, turned around to me and said, “Be a darling, run to the kitchen and tell them they can serve the main course.”
Right then I decided, no, I’m not in a service industry. I'm an artist. If that doesn’t sit well with you, well, we're not a good fit.
